Weather permitting, join Derek Dempsey, founder of Newport Astronomy Club, for an hour of stargazing at Burrishoole Abbey.
Derek will guide you around the October and November sky using a laser pointer. Learn how familiar patterns such as the Summer Triangle and the Big Dipper can help you find your way among the stars. You’ll also have a chance to look through the club’s telescope at the beautiful double star Albireo and, if conditions allow, Saturn and its rings.
Everyone is welcome, whatever your age or experience of astronomy.
Please note: Stargazing depends on clear skies and suitable weather. Please dress warmly.
Remember, it takes at least 20 minutes for your eyes to become dark adapted and this is important for viewing faint objects (like galaxies and nebulae). You lose your night vision instantly if someone shines a white light – our eyes are much less sensitive to red light, so we always recommend red light torches.
Most smart phones have red light settings – check yours out beforehand to familiarise yourself – or check our TOP TIP – If you are using a standard torch, try covering it with a red balloon!
