About Purple Foxglove Films

Purple Foxglove Films is a creative partnership between Joe McDermott and Tommy Hughes, bringing together a shared passion for Mayo’s history, heritage and storytelling.

Joe is an author, researcher, scriptwriter and presenter whose work has explored both the landscape and history of County Mayo. He has written several walking guides, including The Western Way, The Bangor Trail and The Foxford Way, as well as a history of St Mary’s Hospital, Castlebar. His film work includes scripting and narrating historical productions such as The Belcarra Eviction and The Father Manus Sweeney Story.

Tommy is an experienced cameraman, director, editor and producer who has documented events and communities throughout Mayo for many years. His work includes historical films, community productions and documentaries exploring local heritage.

Together, Tommy and Joe combine historical research with filmmaking and a deep knowledge of Mayo, preserving local stories and bringing them to new audiences through film.
