Louise Tomsett

Mammal curator uncovering the remarkable stories hidden within museum collections

About Louise Tomsett

Louise Tomsett is Senior Curator of Mammals at the Natural History Museum in London, where she helps care for, develop and research one of the world’s great scientific collections.

Her work encompasses the remarkable diversity of mammal life, with particular interests in wildlife conservation and forensics, field biology, historical collections and the use of museum specimens in scientific research. Louise’s role also involves specimen preparation and identification, supporting visiting researchers and helping ensure that these invaluable collections are preserved for future generations.

She has worked alongside fellow curator Richard Sabin with marine mammal specimens, including the examination and preparation of a rare spectacled porpoise from the Falkland Islands for the Museum’s research collection.

Through research and public engagement, Louise helps reveal the extraordinary stories held within museum collections – and how specimens collected across generations can continue to deepen our understanding of wildlife, biodiversity and the natural world.
